Dualmask and ZBrush

Hey everyone, I took some time away from the digital canvas to celebrate various things as we tend to do around this time, but now it’s time to get back to creativity. This time, I’m looking at ZBrush.

What’s everyone up to? Try as I might, I can’t seem to pull myself away from ZBrush. I really, really want to learn how to make my own 3d printed figurines so I can turn my characters into physical reality. I’m nowhere near good at it, but I’ve found a few courses that should help if I’m able to concentrate on them.

I’m finding my desire to draw fading a bit. It seems odd just a few months after the completion of RPB that I might be entertaining the thought of not drawing for a while, but this isn’t all that rare for me–in the past, I have written entire novels and wasn’t doing much drawing while they were at the forefront. ZBrush seems to have taken up my interest this time.

I’ve been drawing since I was five years old (and doing it seriously since I was 20). I’ll never totally abandon it, but I’m pretty fascinated by 3D sculpting these days and I really want to see if I can get better at it. Plus, I really want to move forward with my creativity, and it seems like entertaining the thought of making comics feels backwards in a way.

I hope everyone who follows my work can bare with me for a while. I’m not ready to abandon this just yet.

Work in progress:

What I’m doing here is trying to build a ‘base mesh’ that I would use as a starting point for any and all sculpts I would make. I’m using info from a bunch of ZBrush tutorials I’ve viewed on YouTube, Gumroad, Udemy, etc. and using the ‘insert mesh’ method. There are other methods, such as Zspheres and simply building up digital clay, but this method is most comfortable for me.

Right now, I feel least confident in constructing faces and hands–which interestingly enough are also parts that sometimes give me trouble in my drawing, so at least I’m consistent, haha.

The first of my characters that I want to make into a ZBrush sculpt? Why, Jet Dancer of course…
